Vote in school board elections

May 14, 2024

The best-kept secret in Delaware is happening Tuesday, May 14. Eight school districts across the state will be holding school board elections to decide who will oversee the education and social development of their children.

In Delaware, the voter turnout will be a dismal average of 5%. Shouldn’t we all care about giving the children in our community a chance at a better life? A quality education does that.

Yet today, about 70% of students in public schools do not know how to read and do math at grade level by the time they graduate. It’s been this way for more than 20 years. According to the Delaware Department of Education, taxpayers spent $20,230 per student in 2023 with no measurement improvement in academics. We need to and can do better.

A good start is to show up to vote Tuesday. Citizens for Delaware Schools has compiled an online nonpartisan voter’s guide to help people learn about the candidates. Study the issues, follow the candidates, spread the word and vote. It’s that simple.

Do it for the kids.
