June 6 marks the 80th anniversary of the largest amphibious invasion in world history. The 1944 D-Day invasion of Normandy, France – code name: Operation Overlord – marked the beginning of the march of the Allied forces across Europe to defeat Nazi Germany. There were 160,000 Allied troops who landed along a 50-mile stretch of the fortified coast in France. More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion. There were more than 9,000 Allied soldiers killed or wounded that day.
Everybody in Europe has lived in freedom for the past 80 years because of what began on that day. We honor and remember all those who participated and created the legacy that is now known as the Greatest Generation. Lest we forget!
