Rehoboth discriminates against motorcyclists

July 5, 2024

The following letter was sent to the Rehoboth Beach Board of Commissioners with a copy provided to the Cape Gazette for publication.

I do not live within Rehoboth city limits. I live about midway between Rehoboth and Lewes, but I go into Rehoboth to frequent some businesses, and I am writing to let you know that I believe you discriminate against a specific class of drivers.

It is bad enough that Rehoboth charges $4 an hour, the highest amount of any of the local beach communities, but the city makes a lot more money from motorcyclists. I parked in the designated motorcycle parking area (there used to be two) and was charged the same $4 an hour. There is space laid out for five motorcycles in an area as large as a single car, van or pickup truck.

That means the City of Rehoboth is potentially collecting $20 an hour in a space that would accommodate a single passenger vehicle paying $4. Actually, when I was in town recently, there were four motorcycles parked there, for a total of $16 an hour.

That is discriminatory and outrageous. I am not talking about any motorcycle parking in a regular parking space. If a motorcycle parks in one of those spaces, the rider should pay the same rate as the full-size vehicle – even though even that rate is too high. To equalize the situation, I suggest that Rehoboth find a way to charge motorcycles in the designated area $1 an hour. That still would give the city $5.
