The Independence Multicultural Social Group held its second annual Black history event, African Americans and Labor, for residents and their guests Feb. 15 at the Independence clubhouse ballroom.
The mission of the Independence Multicultural Social Group is to sponsor events that give the community’s residents an opportunity to share and exhibit their cultural attachments, and to give Independence residents the opportunity to learn more about the many cultures in their community.
Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester was scheduled to appear, but could not make it. She sent a video praising the group and its mission.
Other guest speakers were Wilhelmina Douglas Stevenson, a 34-year administrative judge in the Merit Systems Protection Board’s Northeast Regional Office in Philadelphia. Also speaking was Larry Freelow of the East Coast Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen.
The event educated guests about the accomplishments of African Americans in all walks of life, learning of African American experiences and conditions in Sussex County, and celebrated the diversity of the community.
