Cape boys’ volleyball moved to 7-4 on the season with a 25-10, 25-22 and 25-8 win over the visiting Tatnall Hornets May 2 at Frederick D. Thomas Middle School gymnasium.
The win came from well-balanced offensive play.
Senior Bryce Patterson led the Vikings with eight kills and an ace. Juniors Lawson Whaley and Braxton Figgs knocked down seven kills each. Whaley also served three aces, and both roofed a block. Ryder Van Horn had six kills. Kieran Morrissey served fives aces for the Vikings. Junior setter Jason Harpel-Rickards put up 28 assists and served two aces.
“The first and third sets were examples of how we should execute as a team,” said junior Braxton Figgs. “The second set showed how our inconsistencies can impact the game quickly. If we can play like we did in the third set, we can hold our own anytime, anywhere.”
Dylan Duroni, Keller Mancari, Jacob Panyko and Zion Hood all contributed to the Vikings’ victory.
“I’m happy with sets one and three today,” said head coach Tyler Coupe. “I thought our kids executed offensively much more consistently, hitting .444 and .619, respectively. Set two was a combo of miscommunications and missed executions. I think the match overall should give us some confidence as we prep for a tough matchup with [Indian River] on Monday. I thought all three pins, Bryce, Keller and Braxton, had a nice day finding gaps and seams within Tatnall’s defense. I thought our service pressure was consistent and allowed our defense a chance to keep our offense in system. Kieran [Morrissey] did a great job vocally and skillfully.”
Senior Gino Greer led the Hornets with seven kills.
