Confidence and kindness.

James Falk Jr. said those are two of the most important things he learned on this journey to becoming an Eagle Scout.

Falk received scouting’s highest rank May 14 at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor at St. Edmond Catholic Church in Rehoboth Beach.

He pledged his sacred honor to the three promises of scouting – duty to God, duty to others and duty to self – and thanked his friends and family for guiding his path.

“Being an Eagle Scout is more than a badge; it’s a way of life. I promise to carry the lessons you’ve all given me into the future,” Falk said.

Falk’s mother, Karen, pinned the Eagle Scout badge on her son’s uniform.

The Cape High senior earned 27 merit badges, even though only 21 are required to become an Eagle Scout.

He has been a patrol leader and a chaplain in Troop 2540.

Falk’s Eagle Scout service project was to build an American flag retirement box for American Legion Post 5 in Rehoboth Beach. Falk received a $4,000 scholarship from Post 5.

He will be attending the University of Delaware in the fall. He said he might major in engineering and possibly join the ROTC.

The Del-Mar-Va Council announced it was awarding a $1,000 summer camp scholarship, in Falk’s name, to a scout who might otherwise not be able to attend camp.

Falk was presented with proclamations from Sens. Chris Coons and Lisa Blunt Rochester, Congresswoman Sarah McBride, the Delaware House and Senate, Gov. Matt Meyer and Sussex County Council.

Falk thanked his mentors for teaching him important life lessons.

“Treat everybody right. They might look a little different than you, but they’re still human beings. That’s the main thing I’ve learned from scouting,” Falk said.
