Minnie V. Grubbe, retired banker

May 24, 2025

Minnie V. Grubbe, born Domenica Veronica Salce, 94, of Naples, Fla., passed peacefully Saturday, May 17, 2025, only three weeks short of her 95th birthday. Min was born in Elmwood Park, Ill., as the fourth and youngest daughter of Antonio Salce and Lucia Lombardi, both proud Italian immigrants. Min is predeceased by her three older sisters, Concetta Docimo, Sarah Belanger and Nancy Salce.

Min graduated from Leyden High School in Franklin Park, Ill., and spent her career in banking, retiring in 1985 from Northern Trust in Chicago. She lived full of energy and was savvy about life.

She married Jerome Walter Grubbe in 1953 and was widowed in 1983. Min never remarried. She is survived by her only child, Deborah Lynn Grubbe and her son-in-law James B. Porter Jr. of Chadds Ford, Pa., and two nieces and a nephew. She was a wonderful role model for Deb.

Min loved being outside in her garden and enjoyed her German Shepherds, Sam and Max. On a boat, she showed her aptitude for fishing, always catching the largest fish, sometimes to the frustration of the men on the boat! She enjoyed being near the water and was happiest when at CECO near Coal City, Ill., or in her homes in Rehoboth Beach, and Marco Island, Fla.

Min always worked to improve her local community by serving as a past president of Rehoboth Beach Yacht and Country Club Homes Association. She played a key role in paving the community streets and laying the groundwork for the area’s sanitary sewers during the early 1990s.

Her family thanks Min’s caregivers at Vista of Hammock Cove and Avow Hospice, both in Naples, Fla., for their kindness towards Min during her final days.

By her wishes, Min will be cremated with no services.

Remembrances are welcome to Avow Hospice of Naples, Fla., or a veteran organization of choice.
