University of Delaware Lewes campus summer tours begin June 4

Docents and students lead free visits to explore science, research facilities
June 2, 2025

Folks of all ages are invited to visit the University of Delaware’s Lewes campus this summer to learn about its undergraduate and graduate student life, faculty research and state-of-the-art facilities.

Local community members, prospective students and science lovers are encouraged to register for a free campus visit led by a knowledgeable team of docents and current students.

The important and exciting work of UD’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment — which includes research on the marine environment from the Delaware Bay to Antarctica and beyond — is featured throughout the visit.

The Lewes campus boasts two main research facilities: Cannon Lab and Smith Lab. In Cannon Lab, visitors will learn about the college faculty and student body, glimpse the marina that houses several research vessels, including the 150-foot R/V Hugh R. Sharp, and explore teaching laboratories where undergraduate students learn about coastal ecology. In Smith Lab, they will meet graduate students studying topics like sharks and skates, ocean currents and robotic technology.

Campus visits start promptly at 10 a.m. and last between one and two hours.

In June, visits are available Wednesday and Friday; in July and August, visits are available Tuesday and Thursday. Visits are geared toward adults, but children age 7 and older are welcome to attend if a science-focused tour suits their interests and attention spans.

Visits begin June 4. Advance registration is required; to reserve a space, go to udel.edu/academics/colleges/ceoe/community/campus-visits.
