Run for the Ribbon 5K raises funds for Reese Cathcart
One of the most emotional events the Seashore Striders produces, the Race for the Ribbon 5K, was held June 1 for its 18th year. Nearly $750,000 has been presented to individuals and families locally here in Striderville to help with their struggles as they deal with cancer. Reese Cathcart was this year’s beneficiary, as she started the race and presented the awards to the winners.
Matt Sparacino of Harrington was the first one back across the finish line in a time of 18:16, while Eric Lewis of Camden Wyoming grabbed second in 18:57. Paul Ecker of Rehoboth Beach was a step back in 18:58, while Martin Rodriguez of New Castle was fourth in 19:01. Kevin Jornlin of Morrisville, Pa., wrapped up the top five finishers in 19:12.
Lisa Sherman, 51, of Washington, D.C., ran a tough 21:54 to win the overall title, while Arina Varrato of Georgetown ran 22:47 for second place, with Bridgett Cole of Milton in 23:10 and Jamie Hicks of Milford in 23:22 to take third and fourth place, respectively. Margaret Tran of Hockessin ran 23:33 to wrap up the top five finishers.
The Seashore Striders presented a check to the Cathcart family for $4,000 to help with their journey.
The Triple Crown
Just around the corner is the Seashore Striders Triple Crown, which is three races, in three towns and in three days. The next stop is Saturday, June 14, at Hudson Fields near Milton, as the second annual Rock ‘n Roll 5K kicks off at 9 a.m. The final event is the 35th annual Father’s Day 5K, hosted by Zoggs & Tiki Jac’s at the Bandstand in Rehoboth Beach at 7:30 a.m., Sunday, June 15. Special awards will be presented at the Jungle Jim’s 5K to all runners and walkers who complete all three events.

Bowers Beach will play host to the second annual Ryan Lambert Memorial 5K this Saturday at 10 a.m. with both a 5K run and 5K walk. Bowers Beach is a quiet beach town just below Dover Air Force Base. The Ryan Lambert Memorial is a charitable organization formed with the intent of raising awareness and funds to support both Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and the American Foundation for Suicide Awareness in the name and memory of Ryan Andrew Lambert.
The inaugural Rehoboth Beach Nation’s Summer Capital 1-Mile Open Water Swim will take place at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 28. Another inaugural event, the Broad Creek Bash 5K & 1-Mile Walk will be held in Laurel at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 16. I am working with longtime Seashore Strider Terri Carson, mom of weekly runner Beau Croll. Registration for the 18th annual Dogfish Dash opened this week and will likely sell out at 2,500 runners. The race is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 28 in Milton at the brewery, beginning at 9 a.m.
