Home of the Brave renovating homeless veterans shelter

Nonprofit honors co-founders at community open house
June 27, 2025

Home of the Brave, a shelter for homeless veterans in Milford, is undergoing renovations aimed at improving quality of life for its residents.

Greg Fuller, Home of the Brave’s acting executive director, gave the Cape Gazette a tour of the construction during a community open house June 21.

The shelter houses up to 15 men at any one time. The women’s facility houses up to five females and their children.

Fuller said 89 veterans went through Home of the Brave in 2024.

A 225-square-foot addition is being built onto the men’s shelter to house a new kitchen, thanks to a federal grant.

“We’ll have a table that seats 12 at a time,” Fuller said. “It’s going to be a full kitchen with all new appliances, all new cabinetry and recessed lights. There will be a sink to wash dishes and a place to set them up.”

Fuller said the new space will replace a small conference room that currently serves as a makeshift dining area.

He said the work should be done in July.

The men’s shelter is a former farmhouse that was renovated by Home of the Brave in 1996. Besides living spaces, the building also houses administrative offices.

Fuller showed off the rooms that are being repainted. Pergo Flooring will replace well-worn carpets. A new septic system will be installed. Those updates were made possible by a grant from the Crystal Trust.

Fuller said all renovations are expected to be done in the fall. He said he plans to leave the Home of the Brave organization once the projects are finished.

Home of the Brave also honored its co-founders at the June 21 event.

Vietnam veterans Les Stephenson, Eldin Adkins, Russ Burgess, Bruce Hickman, Edward Moczulski, Ben Shaw, Steve Spicer and Jeff Stewart launched the organization in 1992.

Fuller read a proclamation from the state Senate recognizing the men for their dedication.

“It was their wisdom and determination to make a difference in the lives of homeless veterans that will forever be ingrained in the hearts of many,” Fuller read.

Home of the Brave also received a donation of $1,190 in gift cards from St. John the Apostle Church in Milford.

The open house featured a lineup of vehicles from the Lowered Habits Car Club.

“We’re a small organization, but we’re doing big things,” Fuller said.
