NBA Finals decided, Phillies go up and down

June 27, 2025

The Oklahoma City Thunder were able to overwhelm a shorthanded Indiana Pacers team to win their first NBA championship in Game 7 on Sunday. Then the NBA Draft started just a few days later. Cooper Flagg was the first pick, going to the Dallas Mavericks, who overcame a 1.8% chance to win the draft lottery in order to pick him. The 76ers picked V. J. Edgecombe with the third pick, a freshman from Baylor University. He is supposed to be a very athletic wing player. I’m happy the Sixers decided to actually keep the third pick. I heard rumors they might trade the pick. Everyone hopes this will be the last time the 76ers draft this high for a while. I actually think the 76ers team will be under a lot of pressure to perform next year or there will be significant changes with both coaching staff and players because of their disappointing season this past year.

The Phillies continue their crazy up-and-down season. They took a two of a three-game series from the Mets at home to leap frog them into first place. And then they proceeded to get swept by the Houston Astros, only scoring one run in the next three-game series. This was all despite their starting pitching doing well in all three games. The Phillies offense needs to quickly get its act together if its wants to keep up with the Mets in the race for first place. And I think they need some new blood in the clubhouse to help their offense. I would like to see Nick Castellanos traded at some point in July because he drives me nuts. He swings at every pitch that is near him and almost never takes walks.

The Wimbledon tennis tournament starts Monday. I hope that the American men continue their consistent play and that a number of them make it to the quarterfinals. I’m curious what Coco Gauff is going to do for an encore after winning the French Open, and what Madison Keys and Emma Navarro can do for themselves.
