Samuel Carter Young, veteran, man of God
July 14, 2025
Samuel Carter Young, 101, departed this life Sunday, July 6, 2025, at Excelcare Rehab and Nursing Home in Lewes. Born March 20, 1924, in Frederica, he was the son of Eugene and Rachel Young.
He received his education from Old Union School in Frederica. As a young boy, he worked on a farm and later in a restaurant as a busboy. He worked for George Lynch as a truck driver from 1946-51, then at Dover Air Force Base as a load master from 1951-59, and later at Johnson & Wynstead Lumber Company from 1959-75. He decided to stop working in 1975 and started working for himself, building cabinets.
He married the love of his life, Elsie Sturgis, July 3, 1960. They were married for 45 years. He talked about her all the time and would say how happy they were together. He used to say, “I married a good woman,” and how much he loved and missed her. He was a member of Burton Chapel AME Church in Milton since 1963. He was a man of God and enjoyed reading his Bible every morning.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from June 1943 to May 1946 as a hatch foreman, where he was stationed in England and Germany. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and WWII Victory Medal during his time in the military. He was recently presented with a letter, along with a medal for his service, from the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
He loved to go fishing on his boat with his good friends Ray and Alfred.
His favorite shows to watch were “Family Feud” with Steve Harvey, and “Judge Judy.” He loved to have family gatherings and cooking. He enjoyed having people stop by so he could talk. He loved to talk around his kitchen table, which was his favorite spot. Trust me, he had so many friends and family who stopped by to see him regularly, I cannot possibly name them all. If that table could talk, we could write a book. Some of his favorite foods to eat were crabs, Popeyes chicken, and Italian subs. He loved to go down to Oyster Rocks to fish or just chat with whoever was down there. He was still driving at 100 years old, doing his own cooking, household chores, and cutting his grass. He was always smiling, and everyone he came into contact with would say how nice he was. He used to say, “I treat everybody the way I want to be treated.”
In addition to his parents Rachel and Eugene, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie (2006); his daughter, Evette (2022); his five brothers, Everett, Eugene, Howard, Clarence and Lawrence "Tim"; and his four sisters, Mildred, Dorothy, Margaret and Rachel.
He leaves to cherish his memories three grandchildren, Rhonda Fleming-Agyemang (Moses), Cheri Fleming, Leroy Fleming, all of Dover; four great-grandchildren, Charity Wilks, Jershon Mallory, Thelylah Fleming and Naomi Fleming, all of Dover; two sisters-in-law, Lois Wolford (George, deceased) of Frankford and Carolyn Harmon (Gary) of Georgetown; along with a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, -nephews, and other family members and friends.
Special thanks to some of his regular kitchen table crew, Raymond Abernathy Jr., Carl Young, Simon Gross, Harold Stokes, Prentice Perry, Alfred Beckett, and Sandra Felton, for everything you have done for him over the years to try and keep that smile on his face. He was loved and will be truly missed by everyone who knew him.
A viewing will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 18, at Burton Chapel AME Church, 29632 Eagles Crest Road, Milton, with a service beginning at 11:30 a.m. Interment will take place at 2 p.m., at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
