On Saturday Aug. 9, as Rehoboth Beach voters cast their votes in this year’s municipal election, there will be a familiar face of the election team missing. This is the first election in 24 years that Inspector of Elections Wayne Steele will not be announcing the election results. Since 2001, he has been the public face of our elections.
There are many Rehoboth Beach staff members, led by Donna Moore, and committed volunteers who make up the team that plans for and manages the operation of election day. No one has guided those volunteers and ensured the accurate, fair, efficient and ethical certification of our elections more than Wayne Steele. Wayne’s experience, expertise, professionalism and, most of all, his calm and measured demeanor when performing the important responsibility of this position have always instilled us with complete faith in the election results.
I have immense confidence in the newly appointed election officers and judges, and, as always, complete confidence and trust in our city staff. Everyone has their own style, but I hope when this year’s results are announced, the “Wayne Steele” delivery style will be maintained, providing us with total confidence in our democratic process, and assuring us that the power and responsibility of elective office is transferred peacefully and with dignity.
Wayne, thank you again for your years of volunteer service to the City of Rehoboth Beach and its citizens.
