Cape soccer earns clean sheet over Middletown

September 11, 2025

The Cape soccer team notched its second straight clean sheet with a 2-0 win over Middletown Sept. 9 at Legends Stadium.

Austin Tyndall opened the scoring just four minutes into the match, finishing a cross-field pass from Carter Matarazzi past Cavs keeper Nicolas Eddinger. Matarazzi then set up the second goal at the eight-minute mark, slipping a pass across the goalmouth to Jackson Hess, who tapped it in at the left post.

“The energy from the team and the fans kept us going,” said Matarazzi. “We left it all on the field tonight.”

“It was a perfect pass from Carter,” added Hess. “He put it right on my foot.”

The second half was all defense, as the Vikings held the Cavs scoreless.

Cape outshot Middletown 13-4 and held a 4-1 advantage in corners. Junior goalie Anton Schierenberg recorded four saves for the Vikings, while Eddinger finished with 11 stops for the Cavs.

“We played great soccer in the first half, smart soccer,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “We’re young, so we don’t always know where our offensive production will come from night to night. Tonight, Carter had a great game with two assists. Starting the season with back-to-back clean sheets is a good look. Austin and Seth Benjamin are coming through for us, and Austin having five goals in two games is awesome.”
