Laela Brown
Jordyn Hollamon was a Big Ten Freshman of the Week for Maryland field hockey last week. Her Delmar teammate and classmate, Laela Brown, has also been an impact player at Wingate University, a private Division II school outside Charlotte, N.C. Laela scored the winning goal in last fall's 4-3 state championship win over Wilmington Friends. During her freshman year at Delmar, she scored the winning goal in a 2-1 Henlopen Conference win over Cape. She was a starter on four Delmar state championship teams. Laela is now a starting forward on Wingate’s field hockey team, which is currently 3-2 on the season. She recorded a goal and an assist in a recent 2-1 win over Lincoln Memorial. Laela has started all five games and leads the team with nine — three goals and three assists. She is majoring in exercise science.
Amara Fruchtman
A libero on the Cape volleyball squad, this junior honors student is leading the Vikings by being a back-row defensive specialist in receiving serves, digging and passing to the setter. “Amara continues to grow as the anchor of our defense. She’s making great reads on attackers in rally and is really comfortable in serve-receive. Her 28 digs versus Newark Charter are a big reason why we were able to fight through that match. Her out-of-system platform and hand setting continue to improve and allow our offense to still run efficiently,” said head coach Tyler Coupe. She has 100 digs on the young season. After volleyball season, she will continue on the Cape hardwood for the basketball team and will play lacrosse in the spring. In her spare time, she likes going to the beach with her friends.
Austin Guerrieri
Austin is a light, lean and long wrestler who was a state champion his freshman year in 2024 at 106 pounds, upsetting Chris Bakhsh in the final in sudden-victory overtime. Austin finished the season 45-7. Last season, he weighed in at 120 and had to deal with Sussex Central’s Malachi Stratton. A late-season injury kept Austin out of the state tournament. The 16-year-old placed first at the Stop, Drop & Run 5K held Sept. 21, at Paradise Grill, running 19:45, which is a 6:23 pace. Austin said he plans to wrestle at 126 pounds this season and is currently cruising at 132. Last season’s 126-pound champion was junior Anthony Andrews of Sussex Tech. Lots of top-shelf grapplers return in the lighter-middle weights; some are certain to move up, and these athletes can all run — they just don’t run from each other.
