Athletes of the Week Oct. 3

October 3, 2025
Logan Cole

A four-sport Mariner Middle School athlete who does cross country, wrestling, baseball and fishing, Logan has been putting the hammer down early this cross country season. On Sept. 22, he placed first at the Sandhill Fields 2.02-mile middle school course, running 12:58, as Mariner defeated Sussex Academy and Georgetown. On Sept. 29, on the Cape High course, Logan placed first again in 11:42, as the Mariner boys defeated Beacon, Georgetown and Seaford while losing to Fred Thomas. Logan’s older brother Brady was a Cape wrestler, while his sister Bridgett is a Cape senior playing flag football and track. Logan plays outfield flor Bagel Bombers 13U United and was an all-star in Milton Little League. Logan does Academic Challenge for math and English, and is a straight-A student.

Grace Hudson

Grace is a junior field hockey defender for Belmont Abbey College who has started all seven games for the 4-3 Crusaders. In five of those games, she never left the field. She was a member of Cape’s 2021 state championship team, and also played unified basketball with the same dedication and enthusiasm. Grace was a two-year field hockey scholar of distinction while at Cape. She is a criminal justice major, which seems a bit incongruous to the niceness of her personality. Belmont Abbey is a private Catholic college with an enrollment of 1,600. Athletic teams compete in Division II sports and are part of the Conference Carolinas. Grace's younger sister, Hayden, committed to Catholic University for softball. Hayden led Cape in rebounding for basketball. Chuck and Amy are their parents. Their grandfathers are Charlie Hudson and Bob Cuthrell, who were high school football coaches.

Ellen Ramsey

A Cape sophomore defender on the field hockey team, Ellen’s game is quickness of hands and decision-making coupled with smarts and fearlessness. Ellen is a happy-to-be-in-the world personality playing competitive sports. She had no idea she would be chosen as an inserter of corners, which requires a deft straight-line, predestined pass followed by getting to the near post for tips, rebounds or a return pass. At Polytech Sept. 30, the starting defender had three goals – each one different, from opportunities to deflections to whacking a ball in midair. Coach Kate Austin said, “Ellen has come into her own this season as a solid defender after missing time last season with an injury. She is a smart in the backfield and has great vision to start the attack. Her strength on the ball inserting helped her score three goals against Polytech.”

Mairead Rishko

Mairead is left-handed like Arya Stark in Game of Thrones. Arya is described as wolf-blooded, as is Mairead on the pitch, where she’s an athlete who absorbs the strength of opponents and makes it part of her DNA. No one on the Cape team transitions from left to right as effortlessly as Mairead. She had two assists in the recent 5-0 win over Polytech. Mairead can set up or finish, and she plays great defense. She recently verbally committed to Delaware, where she will join her sisters Lulu and Ella on the Blue Hens roster. Coach Kate Austin: “Mairead is a worker in the midfield. Like her sisters, she has an extremely high hockey IQ and reads the play well to see open space and passes, as well as effective defending lines. She is an important part of our attacking and defensive penalty corner units.”
