Short honored for volunteer fire service

October 17, 2025

Rep. Danny Short, R-Seaford, was recently presented with the Distinguished Community Service Award by the Delaware Volunteer Firefighters Association.

In presenting Short with the honor, DVFA 2024 President Ron O'Neal said the honor recognizes fire service personnel for outstanding contributions to the fire service and their communities.

Short is the second recipient of the award, which was established two years ago to memorialize the late Edward “Mike” Rush Jr.

Short has been an active member of the Delaware volunteer fire service community for more than four decades, is a life member and past chief of the Seaford Volunteer Fire Department, a former state fire school instructor, and was previously inducted into the Delaware Firefighters Hall of Fame.

“This was a total surprise, and I’m very honored to have received this,” Short said after receiving the award during the last day of the DVFA’s 31st annual conference in Dewey Beach. “Especially since the award is named after Mike Rush, who was a great guy and really supported the fire services.”
