Cape unified football powers past Blue Raiders 50–26

October 6, 2025

The Cape unified football team used its speed and tough defense to sink the Blue Raiders of Woodbridge 50-26 on the turf at Legends Stadium Oct. 3. The win moves the Vikings to 1-1 on the season, while Woodbridge falls to 0-1.

After an early safety, Cape’s Zane Richardson opened the offensive scoring with a 25-yard catch and run, giving the home team an 8-0 lead.

“It was an awesome game,” said Richardson. “I love seeing everyone have fun, score touchdowns and play their best. I don’t know what else to say – it was great and incredible. I’m just happy we won and that everyone got to play in such a great game.”

Austin Hastings added the next score on a 15-yard touchdown run. Richardson hauled in the PAT to extend the lead to 18-0 after a second safety.

“I feel great,” said Hastings. “My leg was sore before the game, but you have to play through it. I’m mostly a defensive guy, but I can make plays on offense too.”

Woodbridge responded with a touchdown and two-point conversion, but the Vikings quickly answered. Hayden Lenz intercepted a pass to set up a 30-yard touchdown run by Harian Jones to make it 24-8 Cape.

Hastings struck again with a 15-yard touchdown reception from Allaire Burton, and Bobby Harman-Strike added the two-point conversion, stretching the lead to 32-8 with 4:15 left in the first half.

The Blue Raiders showed some fight, scoring on a 30-yard run to close the gap to 32-14, but Xavier Zimmer powered up the middle for a 10-yard touchdown to give Cape a 38-14 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Julian Puente found the end zone on a 10-yard run to make it 44-14. Richardson then came up big again, soaring for an interception, though the Vikings couldn’t capitalize on the turnover. Woodbridge cut the deficit with a 25-yard touchdown run, making it 44-20 with 6:15 remaining.

Harley Jones sealed the win with a 25-yard catch and run for Cape’s final touchdown. The Blue Raiders added a late 40-yard scoring pass with three minutes left, but the Vikings held strong for the 50-26 victory.

“It’s a big win for us,” said Cape coach Drew Messick. “It was a great team effort – everyone got to play and contribute. Both teams showed great sportsmanship, and that’s what this game is all about.”

The Vikings travel to Dover Wednesday, Oct. 8, for a Henlopen Conference matchup with the Senators.
