Students in Maria Bender’s second-grade classes at H.O. Brittingham Elementary recently combined creativity and character education in a meaningful and memorable way.
As part of a poetry unit, students worked together in small groups to write classroom mission statements in the form of acrostic poems. The process allowed them to brainstorm words and ideas that reflected their shared values, such as kindness, respect, responsibility and cooperation, while practicing their writing and poetry skills. After each group shared their poem, the classes voted to select a final mission statement that would represent them for the rest of the school year.
Through this activity, students not only strengthened their understanding of poetry but also deepened their sense of belonging and pride in their classroom community. The project encouraged teamwork, creativity, and thoughtful reflection on what it means to contribute to a positive learning environment.
