The Cape boys’ soccer team celebrated the Class of 2026 with a 4-1 victory over Dover Oct. 23 at Legends Stadium.
Cape’s first three goals came on the tens.
Will Burke got Cape on the scoreboard at 10 minutes off a lead pass from Brenner Short, beating the Dover goalie low and to the left.
Lawson Whaley added the second score 10 minutes later unassisted, then Logan Cortijo tallied a goal 10 minutes after that from a Whaley pass.
“Brenner held the ball in the back third and was able to pass a great ball through Dover’s backline to set myself up to slot the ball into the back of the net,” said Burke.
The first half ended 3-1 with Cape on top.
Alan Hernandez-Becerra scored with two minutes left in the contest off a pass from Cortijo to end the scoring with a 4-1 Cape victory.
“Going into the game, we were all excited, but knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game,” Burke said. “Our defense played exceptionally well, keeping Dover out of our half. Our coaches put in a game plan for us and we were able to execute. It was a great team win.”
The Vikings outshot the Senators 13-4 and held a 10-2 edge in corners. Cape goalies Anton Schierenberg and Jacob Panyko each stopped two shots, while Dover keeper Aiden Cook made seven stops and Peter Egipciaco made two saves.
“This game was a true team win and a great night to celebrate our seniors,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “We need to beat or tie [Sussex] Central to win the North. The boys are excited to hopefully get the result we need against Sussex Central, so then hopefully we’ll see Sussex Academy in the conference championship game.”
