Cape schools welcome children’s author Laura Gehl

November 27, 2025

Three Cape district elementary schools recently welcomed Laura Gehl, the author of more than 50 picture books for children, to their buildings to visit and speak with students.

Made possible through a partnership with Browseabout Books and the Lewes Public Library, the visit was part of a new initiative aiming to inspire a love of reading and writing by connecting students directly with authors who create literature for children.

Reading from her latest book, “Elevator on 74th Street,” Gehl also shared stories about her writing process and engaged with students as she visited Milton, Lewes and Rehoboth elementary schools.

That evening, families were invited to the Lewes Public Library for an interactive reading and discussion followed by a book signing.

“The opportunity for students and families to meet an author in person makes the reading and writing experience come alive,” said Dr. Audrey Dempsey, supervisor of elementary education and early learning. “This partnership allows us to extend learning beyond the classroom while fostering a deeper appreciation for storytelling and creativity.”

“Collaborations like this strengthen our community’s connection to literacy,” said Jennifer Noonan, children’s librarian at Lewes Public Library. “It’s exciting to see local students engage so enthusiastically with authors and books. We look forward to continuing this partnership and bringing more opportunities like this to the students at Cape.”

The district extends gratitude to Browseabout Books and the Lewes Public Library for their ongoing partnership in promoting literacy, imagination and the joy of reading for all students.
