James Patrick O’Doherty, veteran, cherished family

October 29, 2025
James Patrick O’Doherty, 80, of Lewes, passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 20, 2025. Born Jan. 15, 1945, in Chester, Pa., James, affectionately known as “GPop,” lived a full and joyful life marked by laughter, love, and a meaningful impact on others.

A proud graduate of the Pennsylvania Military College, James carried that discipline and determination throughout his life. After his honorable military service in the U.S. Army, James embarked on a distinguished career as a financial software executive, where his dedication and integrity were evident. He found his greatest pride and purpose within his family. James devoted himself to providing unwavering love, steadfast support, and gentle guidance, instilling in his family the strength and compassion to uphold these cherished values throughout their lives.

For 36 years, James was the devoted husband of Susan O’Doherty. Together they built a life rich with love, laughter, and family traditions that will be carried forward by all who knew him. He was the cherished father of Adam, Shannon and Matthew O’Doherty, and Jason Schenk, all of whom he adored and of whom he was immensely proud. His role as “GPop” to his grandchildren was one he treasured above all—his smile would light up whenever they walked into the room.

James, a true gentleman, had an infectious charisma that made everyone feel like a lifelong friend. Whether sharing a story, offering encouragement, or cracking a joke, he had a way of lifting spirits wherever he went. His passions reflected his zest for life; Jim enjoyed golfing, traveling with Susan to favorite destinations, enjoying a classic John Wayne movie, or relaxing with a good book. Yet, nothing brought James greater happiness than time spent surrounded by his family.

Beyond his home, James was deeply committed to his community beginning with his significant involvement in regional sports in Chester County. He was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church and proudly volunteered in Lewes Fire Department Auxiliary as well as the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Through his generosity and faith, James touched countless lives and inspired everyone fortunate enough to know him.

James will be remembered for his kind heart, his unwavering love for his family, and his ability to find joy in the simple moments of life. His laughter and spirit will echo into the hearts of those he leaves behind, a lasting reminder of a life beautifully lived.

James was predeceased by his parents, Mary and James O’Doherty; and his brother, John “Jack” O’Doherty.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Susan O’Doherty; his children, Adam and Gina O’Doherty, and their children, Marianna, Kayla and Shayne; Shannon O’Doherty and her daughter Alyx Barszowski; Matt and Debra O’Doherty, and their children, Andrew and Grant; and Jason and Pilar Schenk, and their children Dayton, Milo and Gisele.
