La Red aims to help 100 children

November 28, 2025

The holidays can be a challenging time for many of the families we serve at La Red Health Center. No one knew this better than our former Director of Pediatrics Dr. Marisol Santiago.

Every year, Santiago carefully observed her patients, keeping track of their needs and wishes, and most of all, which families needed help. In the fall, she sprang into action, recruiting staff, raising funds and personally shopping for each of “her kids.”

From toys to winter coats, hats, mittens, scarves, healthy snacks and games, she made sure every child felt the magic of the season. With the help of Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Grinch, and our La Red elves, Santiago created a holiday full of love, joy and community care.

Santiago’s dedication made a lasting impact, and it’s no wonder her patients and their families adored her. Earlier this year, she retired, leaving behind a big legacy and big shoes to fill.

The staff at La Red want to continue the tradition, ensuring our pediatric patients feel remembered, celebrated and cared for during the holidays.

We need your help. This is our first year without Santiago leading the way.

We are turning to our community to help us make these holiday wishes come true. The support and sense of belonging to a community are more important this year than ever.

About 99% of our patients at La Red live at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. Many of our patients, mostly women and children, struggle to pay rent, clothe their families and put food on the table. For many, they simply cannot afford anything extra, like toys or sweet treats. Your help can make sure these families also enjoy the simple pleasures of the season and stay warm this winter

You can help by donating toys, coats, hats, mittens or socks to La Red Health Center’s Save the Holiday event. Hosting a coat or toy drive is another wonderful way to participate. Children’s books, art supplies, gift-wrapping supplies, and holiday snacks and treats are also appreciated. La Red hopes to help 100 children this season with toys and essentials. We also hope to put together 100 food boxes to help feed our families this holiday season.

If you would like to help us make the holidays brighter for our patients here at La Red, you can donate online at LaRedHealthCenter.org/donate-and-get-involved, email SSmith@LaRedHealthCenter.org, or call 302-855-2020 ext. 1117.
