June 26, 2012

The Delaware Association of Athletic Directors has announced that Joe Thomson of Sussex Technical High School is the winner of the 2011-12 Athletic Director of the Year Award. Thomson has been athletic director at Sussex Tech since 2005.

The release said, "Joe is extremely active with the education of new athletic directors in the state and serves as the DIAA Officials Committee chairperson.  He is a current member of the Board of Directors for the DIAA and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Delmarva Region."

Thomson was also cited for his role in helping the school win the DIAA State Sportsmanship Award for the past four years.  Earlier in his career at Tech, Thomson coached the varsity boys' basketball team.

Currently the position of athletic director/transportation director is posted on the Sussex Tech website under the heading anticipated vacancy. Thomson has changed his personal contact information, which drops the state/school website address, and replaced it with a gmail account. Thomson also changed his cell phone number.

A graduate of Salesianum High School in 1971, De Sales University in 1975 and Widener University in 1984, Thompson holds a BS in psychology and an MBA.

He also became only the third athletic director in Delaware to achieve the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association certification as a certified master athletic administrator.

Thomson was also voted as the NIAAA State Award of Merit winner from Delaware for the 2011-12 school year.  According to the organization's website, http://www.nia.org/Award/awards.asp, the award is presented to an individual who "is deemed by the association to have performed meritorious service to the state."

The formal presentation of both awards will be held at the annual DAAD meeting in October.
