Athletes of Week Dec 26

December 26, 2025
Grayson Davis

A Cape freshman descended from 150 to 144 pounds for the Beast of the East and made the podium with a fifth-place finish. Grayson is only the third wrestler in Cape history to place at the Beast, joining Matt Graviet (third) in 1998 and Thomas Ott (eighth) in 2013. Grayson finished the weekend with a 7-2 record. “Grayson has a tremendous work ethic and is willing to do what it takes to be successful on the mat,” said coach Chris Mattioni. “What has impressed the most is how he keeps his composure before, during and after matches. Once he lost in championship round three to the No. 2 seeded wrestler, he had one more match to make it to the second day. He took a bad shot in that match and was put on his back and trailed 5-0. He battled back and won by decision 11-8. That’s impressive for any wrestler on that stage, especially for a freshman. Grayson also has natural leadership abilities and can positively influence others around him.”

Jaysiah Dixon

Jay is an eighth-grader who wrestles for Mariner in the 185-pound weight class. In the Vikings' opening match against Georgetown Middle School, Jay produced a pin in the first period to give what is believed to be Mariner wrestling's very first win over Georgetown 44-41. He earned Player of the Match for his efforts. It isn't the first time Jay has been recognized for his contributions to Milton, as he was part of the 2023 Pat Knight majors team that went undefeated. The Mariner squad is 2-2 on the season so far. After defeating Georgetown, the Vikings fell to Beacon Middle 58-25, defeated Sussex Academy Middle 60-25 and lost to Sussex Central Middle 50-39. When Mariner’s wrestlers return from winter break, they’ll host Seaford Monday, Jan. 5, then Milford Wednesday, Jan. 7. They’ll have five more dual meets after that before wrapping up the season in early February.

Trey Leggins

If you want to catch up with Trey, it’s best to get a head start. The Queens University junior is what track coaches call a long sprinter. At 6-foot-3, he fits the description. Trey is an easy glider over the 400 and 800 meters. At the Winston-Salem College Kickoff Dec. 6, Trey ran a 48.19 in the seeded section of the 400 meters to place fourth. Trey was leadoff of Cape’s 4-by-800 team in 2023 that won both the Henlopen Conference and state meets, and also jumped 21 feet in the long jump. Cape coach Matt Lindell said, “A versatile athlete, leader and all-around great person.” Trey led off the Queens University record-setting 4-by-400 relay, posting a personal-best time of 48.08 as the Lions ran 3:17.36 to place third. Trey is majoring in exercise and sport science. Trey’s younger brother Carter is a seventh-grader at Mariner, a cross country and basketball guy. Dad Bobby was on the 1996 Cape basketball team that lost in the state finals in overtime to Howard.

Asher Woods

A sophomore on the Delmarva Christian boys’ basketball team, this guard has lit up the scoreboard in the Royals’ last three games. He hit for 15 against ESIAC rival Worcester Prep, 11 against Parkside and 16 against Milford. His scoring streak included 10 baskets from behind the three-point arc. He is averaging 11 points per game so far for the 3-3 Royals. Moved from a starting position to the first off the bench, Asher has accepted the move, realizing it was the best for the team, and has responded by playing his best basketball and making it almost impossible to take him off the floor. “He has a great work ethic,” said assistant coach Tom Pedersen. “And you will be seeing and reading a lot more about him and our team in the future." In the off-season, Asher plays for the Fusion travel basketball team. When not on the hardwood, he interns at The Crossing (Lewes Church of Christ) near Milton.
