Athletes of the Week Jan. 23

January 23, 2026
Ozmeer Batson

A vocal leader on the Cape basketball team, this junior forward can mix it up underneath and break ankles in the midcourt. He is averaging five points per game, and attacks the rim with athleticism and strength. "When Oz has his focus and his energy right, he is one of the best athletes in the conference," said coach Steve Re. "He is so valuable for us because he can guard any position and rebounds from anywhere. His hustle and energy are contagious, just like his personality. He does a lot of dirty work, but gets little recognition." Oz was also a standout running back and linebacker for the football team. Oz is a member of Morgan's Message and Henlopen Leaders at Cape. In his spare time, he likes hunting, fishing and hanging around with his family and friends.

Victoria Evans

You can find this Sussex Academy senior smiling wherever she is, whether it is patrolling the waves crashing on Rehoboth Beach or supporting her teammates at the Sussex Academy Aquatics Center. An example of her talents in the pool was her Jan. 12 performance against Sussex Tech when she won the individual medley, the backstroke, and helped the medley relay team to victory. Victoria is set to continue her swimming career at Bloomsburg University this fall after she signed her letter of intent to swim for the Division II school in central Pennsylvania. The Huskies will not only get a talented swimmer on their team, but also an outstanding leader whose method of inspiration is persistent positivity.

Braxton Figgs

This Cape senior honors student is playing big for the Vikings basketball team, finishing through contact around the rim, challenging shots and rebounding on the defensive end. At 6-foot-6, he is a force in the paint. He had 26 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Caesar Rodney last week. He has blocked 22 shots on the season, and is snagging an impressive nine rebounds per game. "This is the most consistent Braxton has been in his four years," said Cape coach Steve Re. "He comes focused in practice and leads by example every day. When he plays with great effort and is attacking the rim, we are always going to be difficult to beat. He has performed at another level so far this season." In his second year as captain, he has been a steady influence on the hardwood and in the locker room. Braxton is in the National Honor Society and is a Morgan's Message ambassador at Cape. He also plays front line for the Vikings’ volleyball team in the spring.

Amalia Fruchtman

This Cape senior is the type of athlete who could take this honor every week during the volleyball and basketball seasons. Amalia leads the two-loss Vikings, who are undefeated in the Henlopen North, in myriad ways. The obvious is her scoring – she joined the 1,000-point club in December – and her rebounding – she joined the 500-rebound club two possessions before her 1,000th point. What fans may not know is her locker room skills. She seems to know what buttons to push and when to push them to get the most out of her teammates. Her positive intensity continues on and off the court, as she is one of the loudest supporters when she is taking her break.
