The Town of Dewey Beach has issued a winter storm warning to be in effect from 7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 24, to 7 a.m., Monday, Jan. 26, with forecasts of heavy snow mixed with freezing rain and ice.
Total snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches, and ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch, are possible, according to an alert the town sent out Jan. 23.
Wind gusts up to 35 mph are possible.
Essential town workers, including the Dewey Beach Police Department and the town’s maintenance team, will be on duty during the storm.
The maintenance team is set to begin plowing snow early Sunday morning. The police department parking lot and King Charles Avenue toward Rehoboth Beach will be prioritized, in case of emergency in which fire or EMT vehicles have to enter Dewey from Rehoboth.
The town is requesting that if the storm does move in, folks avoid parking their vehicles on streets to allow maintenance crews to clear roads more effectively.
The town will be working in coordination with DelDOT to keep roads, including side streets, as clear as possible. The maintenance team will not be plowing private driveways.
Orange traffic cones will be placed at speed bumps.
The alert urges people to avoid driving if possible, as there is a possibility for periods of sleet or ice during the storm. If travel is necessary, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
In case of urgent questions or concerns, town staff will have access to email. To reach them, use the Contact Us feature on the town website, and staff will respond as soon as possible.
For emergencies, dial 911. For non-emergency police, call 302-227-1110.
If you are experiencing a DPL power outage, you can report it by calling 1-800-833-7476.
