There’s just a few small stories to talk about this week.
The Super Bowl matchup has been decided. It’s the New England Patriots versus the Seattle Seahawks. I will be cheering for the Seahawks because they’re in the NFC along with the Eagles, and because the Patriots have won a lot of the Super Bowls in the recent past.
I’m surprised the NHL is continuing to play games until Feb. 5. The opening ceremony for the Olympics is Feb. 6. The men’s hockey starts play Feb. 11, but that seems incredibly unfair to all of the countries with NHL players on their teams to only have a few days to practice before the games start. That is bizarre scheduling on the NHL's part.
In the NBA, the Eastern Conference standings are very crowded. Currently, the 76ers are in the sixth position in the standings. They are very capable of making a run in the playoffs this year. They need to continue winning games the next two weeks before the All-Star break around Valentine’s Day. Then there are only 25 games or so left in the regular season.
The Australian Open tennis tournament is down to the semifinals on the men’s side and the finals on the women’s side. The male American players are making some progress, but they still can’t get by Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner who are both continuing to get down to the business end of these tournaments pretty easily.
On the women’s side, American Jessica Pegula had a chance to get to the finals but she lost in straight sets to Elena Rybakina. The women’s final will be between Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. Because of the significant time difference, the finals will be on Friday and Saturday in the United States.
I’m tired of this cold weather, but there are only two weeks until spring training baseball starts. Hopefully that means the warm weather will come up from Florida and Arizona. Ha ha. Go Phillies.
