St. Peter’s to Bury the Alleluias as Lent Begins
As the season of Lent approaches, St. Peter’s Church will observe the tradition of “burying the Alleluias,” marking the transition from the joy of Epiphany to the reflective season of Lent.
Last week, children in Godly Play created handmade Alleluias in preparation for this meaningful tradition. This Sunday, they will begin the morning at 9:30 with Godly Play as usual. At the Peace, the children will join the 10:15 a.m. worship service for Holy Communion. We will close the service by gathering around the Baptismal font where the Alleluias will be placed and symbolically “buried.”
The Alleluias will remain in the font throughout the season of Lent and will return with celebration after Easter Sunday, when the church once again proclaims the joyful word.
This cherished tradition helps children and adults come together in this time of getting ready that is Lent. All are welcome to join St. Peter’s for worship at 10:15 a.m.
