Among the many plausible concerns over unchecked or poorly planned growth in our region, the issue of affordable housing rises to the top. Without reasonable, affordable housing for the good workers who keep this region's economy and tourism healthy, sufficient employment of basic services in this region will continue to plague us.
This brings me to the all-important question that has yet to be answered. What constitutes affordable housing for service providers in this region? I have yet to read any formulas for this. The standard used to be that monthly mortgage or rental cost should not exceed a certain percentage of your monthly income. What is an intelligent number that responds to this question? This should be an important statistic in determining an affordable housing plan.
