A special Amsterdam journey shared with the Gazette

February 25, 2026

Mary Johnston of Rehoboth Beach recently joined her godmother, Marijke van Buchem, on a heartfelt trip to Amsterdam, Marijke’s home city in the Netherlands. The visit offered a rare opportunity for the two to share time while exploring one of Europe’s most captivating destinations. From strolling along Amsterdam’s iconic canals to visiting world-famous sites such as the Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank House, Mary and Marijke immersed themselves in the city’s culture and history. They also ventured beyond the city to the shores of the North Sea, taking in the fresh coastal air and the Dutch landscape that Marijke once called home. Mary wrote to the Gazette after her trip and said, “The trip was filled with unforgettable moments – from learning to gracefully navigate the busy network of bikes, trams, scooters and cars to enjoying quiet reflections over Dutch coffee and pastries. My time with Marijke was truly precious. To see Amsterdam through Marijke’s eyes made every moment magical.” The journey not only deepened their bond but also created memories that will last a lifetime.
