Over the past several weeks, our coastal community has experienced three significant snow events, including one blizzard that made travel difficult and, at times, unsafe. For many, these storms were an inconvenience. For the more than 300 seniors and homebound neighbors served by Meals on Wheels Lewes–Rehoboth, they had the potential to be much more serious.
I am incredibly grateful to share that, thanks to extraordinary teamwork and commitment, not a single client was left without support.
Twice during these recent weather events, our food partner, Fish On Lewes – part of the SoDel Concepts family – adjusted their kitchen schedule to prepare additional meals in advance of anticipated Monday closures. By providing extra meals on Friday deliveries, we were able to ensure our clients had nutritious food in hand before the snow arrived. That kind of flexibility and partnership does not happen by accident; it reflects a deep commitment to community.
Equally inspiring was the response from our volunteer drivers. Many took on additional deliveries to accommodate schedule changes. During the blizzard, volunteers navigated challenging road conditions and, in some cases, difficult walkways to reach doorsteps. Their dedication to the safety and well-being of our clients was nothing short of extraordinary.
Our clients are among the most vulnerable members of our community. For them, a missed meal is not simply an inconvenience – it can be a serious hardship. These recent storms reminded us that Meals on Wheels is more than a delivery service; it is a network of neighbors looking out for one another.
To Fish On Lewes, to our 180 volunteer drivers, and to the broader community that continues to support our work: thank you. Your willingness to step forward in challenging conditions ensures that our seniors remain safe, nourished, and connected – no matter the weather.
