Grayson Davis
Cool as ice and ready to sacrifice, Grayson and Nick Walker were back-to-back hammers emerging from Saturday night showdowns as wrestling state champions for Cape Henlopen. And Grayson is just a freshman. Coach Chris Mattioni: “Grayson is a special athlete who excels on the mat. He has had an impressive freshman season, finishing with a 45-3 record with 19 pins. He is a Beast of the East All-American, finishing fifth, and a 2026 Henlopen Conference and Delaware state champion. He is personable and has developed into an excellent leader for the team this year. At the state tournament, he was 4-0 with two pins and two tech falls, all in the first period. He is going to have an amazing career at Cape.”
Mia Jaoude
This Cape junior is the first swimmer in the school’s history to win an individual swimming event at the state championships. Mia won the 50 freestyle in 23.90, breaking her own school record. She anchored the 200 free relay team of Sidney Caldwell, Lily Touw and Isla Touw with a blazing 23.35 split to win a second event. She also garnered a bronze in the 100 fly and silver in the 400 free relay. The 400 free relay team’s finals time of 3.40.10 broke the record they set at the Henlopen Conference Championship a few weeks ago. She received the DIAA student-athlete academic award and was awarded first-team all-state. "Mia is a gamer," said Cape coach Bill Geppert. "When the score is super close, there is no one that I want more to anchor our relay. She simply refuses to lose and gives everything she has in the tank."
Anna Mumford
The Sussex Academy junior recently performed admirably at the swimming state championships. She won the grueling 500 freestyle for the third year in a row, finishing an impressive 12 seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer. She also finished second in the 200 free and swam the butterfly leg of the medley relay team that took third. She was also awarded first-team all-state. "The only thing more consistent than Anna's great performances is her cheerful demeanor," said Seahawks coach Tom Martiner. "Not only is she a great swimmer, but also a great teammate and leader as well." She has committed to the University of Connecticut. She hopes to major in English and political science with a minor in philosophy. She hopes to go to law school as a grad student.
Nick Walker
Nick is the hard-charging bulldog with a brain. He is the 4.1 GPA guy who’s also a roughhousing technician. And he got to rumble in the room every practice day with fellow state champion Grayson Davis. Two guys who are already good just kept getting better. Coach Chris Mattioni: “Nick wrestled tough throughout the state tournament. He finished 4-0 with two tech falls, a pin and a 5-2 decision in the finals. His last win tied him with Anthony Caruso, also a four-time finalist and two-time state champ, with 151 career wins. Nick finished his high school career 151-24 with 59 pins. He will be missed next year. He has not decided on his college yet, but plans to major in engineering or finance.” In addition to being a two-time state champion, Nick is also a four-time Henlopen Conference champion.
