The biggest obstacle in our lives is usually ourselves.

The voice in our head that says:
You’re too old.
You can’t do that.
What will people think?

Trust me… I know that voice very well.

Six months ago I could barely walk.

Now I’m stronger than ever!

Life is funny like that.

When I lived in Los Angeles, I went to Wildcard Boxing three times a week for six years with my coach, Ernie. I loved everything about it. It relieved my stress, transformed my body, and cleared my mind. When you box, you can’t think about anything except what you’re doing, those were my only truly mindful moments. If you think about anything else… you get punched in the face.

But when we moved to Delaware, I tried to start boxing again but my body was in so much pain that it just wasn’t fun anymore.

I had always had back pain and hip pain, but after the move it became unbearable.

The move itself was a very traumatic time. I had just gone through my bilateral mastectomy. My show ended in a pretty shitty way. I was leaving the industry I had worked in for over 25 years and losing a huge part of my identity. We were selling the house I loved so much and moving across the country.

It was a lot.

Sofia was not happy about the move either. She had to start a new school for 7th grade in a completely different world where she didn’t know a single person.

Ted was still in LA dealing with the house sale, and I couldn’t fall apart. I had to show Sofia that all of this was going to be okay. So, I did what I always do - got busy!

I’ve always been very good at compartmentalizing trauma, so I hit the ground running. The house was unpacked and fully set up in three days. I enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach. It’s a two-year program, but I fast-tracked it and completed it in nine months. At the same time, I was full steam ahead creating business plans for the studio.

I basically blocked out the entire harrowing LA nightmare as if it never happened and moved forward. I needed a clear head and a focused mind. I was actually pretty impressed with myself.

“Wow, I’m so resilient.”

But you know what? You can’t out-busy trauma.
(Trust me - I’ve been trying my whole life.)

My body had the receipts, and all that mental stress transferred right into my hips.

By the time the studio opened, I could barely get through a yoga class. Six months later, I could barely walk. My body was literally falling apart.

I felt like I was cursed - I opened a yoga studio and I could barely get out of a chair. (Terrible advertisement for a yoga studio!) I couldn’t live like that anymore.

On the one-year anniversary of Hiatus 24, I had my first hip replaced and I had my 2nd hip replaced in September.

I feel like a new person. I have NO PAIN. I haven’t been able to do pigeon pose in five years - what a fantastic moment that was! Every class I felt myself getting stronger and stronger.

As I started feeling better, I began to really miss boxing. I was excited to see how I would box with these new hips.

But then the question became… where? I couldn’t join another gym - that would be crazy.

So the obvious answer became clear: We need to bring boxing to Hiatus 24. And OMG… with the infrared heat it would be next-level amazing.

We’ll call it HOT BOX. And I’m going to teach it!

My inner voice immediately screamed: “WHAT?! You couldn’t even walk six months ago! Are you crazy? You can’t teach boxing!”

Let’s just say I had a pretty intense argument with myself.

But I won.

I completed my fitness trainer certification (and scored a 92 on my final exam — thankyouverymuch). I’ve been sharpening my boxing skills at Terry Richardson Boxing Academy and working incredibly hard to build a program that I’m really proud of.

And I’m so excited to share it with you.

Some people might think boxing is a strange addition to a yoga studio, but it’s actually the perfect fit.

Hiatus is about taking time to take care of yourself. And that “hiatus” can mean different things depending on the day.

One day your body needs a restorative hiatus.
Another day you need a sweaty Pilates class.

Some days you need to rest your nervous system...

And some days… you just need to punch something.

Hiatus is whatever your body and mind need at that moment.

After a boxing session, I always felt an incredible sense of release. It’s one of the best stress

relievers I’ve ever experienced. I love the intensity, the challenge, and pushing myself to my limits.

And now I get to share that with all of you.

Starting in April, we’ll be offering free community classes so you can check it out. I’m keeping the classes small, six people max. I’ll be sprinkling them throughout the schedule: some early mornings, maybe a 4pm class, we’ll experiment with different times. So when you see one pop up, be sure to sign up quickly so you don’t miss out.

If nothing else, I promise you will sweat, box, dance, and have fun.

And honestly… I still can’t believe I’m a fitness instructor. Who would have thought?!

It’s a lot harder than it looks, by the way.

Huge thanks to my coach Ernie, who made me fall in love with boxing and pushed me to my limits every single time. I was a mess when I first showed up at that gym, but we kept showing up and the benefits were enormous.

And to my current teachers who are helping me so much now: Valeria, Aaron, and Casey. You inspire me every day. SO EXCITED!!!!
