Beginning Wednesday, March 25, the stop lights at the Route 1 intersection of Shuttle Road and Sea Blossom Boulevard outside Rehoboth Beach will be ticketing vehicles that run red lights.

The Delaware Department of Transportation installed variable message boards on northbound and southbound Route 1 near the intersection recently.

According to DelDOT’s Electronic Red Light Safety Program report for calendar year 2024, the most recent available, a violation is $137.50 – a base fine of $75, a surcharge of $37.50, a $10 assessment for the Volunteer Ambulance Company Fund and a $15 assessment for the Fund to Combat Violent Crimes. The total receipts collected through the program in calendar year 2024 were $8,339,321.20.

The report said there were 58,854 civil violations issued for running red lights. This was a decrease of 1.44% from calendar year 2023, when 59,716 violations were distributed.

Throughout the state, there are 102 red light cameras positioned at 46 signalized intersections.

In Sussex County, there are red light cameras at the intersections of Route 1 at Munchy Branch and Miller roads; Route 1 at Old Landing Road; Route 1 at Route 9; and Route 13 at Road 40 and Redden Road.

The 2024 report says the new red light camera is the only one recommended for the area in calendar year 2025 and 2026.
