Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens day trip set May 5

April 12, 2026

The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and Rehoboth Art League are partnering to offer a day trip Tuesday, May 5, to Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens in Washington, D.C.

Attendees will tour the home and gardens of cereal heiress and philanthropist Marjorie Merriweather Post.

The bus will depart promptly at 8 a.m., May 5, from the museum, 511 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach, with an expected return time of 6 p.m.

Following a special welcome from Hillwood Executive Director Kate Markert, guests will enjoy a private tour of the grounds exploring the history, design and plantings on the 13 acres of formal gardens. May is the perfect time to visit Hillwood's gardens, which Post designed to flower most beautifully in spring and fall. In early May, Hillwood’s azaleas will be showstoppers.

A special exhibition, On Time: Giving Form to the Fleeting, is on view, showcasing Hillwood's lavish collection of timepieces from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, including exquisite examples from Fabergé, Cartier and Tiffany & Co.

Guests may also visit Post's elegant Georgian-style mansion with interiors decorated in her beloved 18th-century French style and featuring extraordinary collections of Fabergé, French and Russian porcelain, 18th-century French furniture, tapestries and other precious objects.

Lunch is available at Hillwood's café.  Regular cafe reservations at the Merriweather Café for groups of four to nine people can be made online via Resy, by calling visitor services at 202-686-5807 or by contacting info@hillwoodmuseum.org. Merriweather To Go does not require advance reservations.

Last spring's partnership bus trip sold out quickly, and with limited seating available on the charter bus, early registration is strongly encouraged.
