The Sussex Tech baseball team moved to 3-3 on the season with a 2-0 win over previously unbeaten Cape April 9 at the Sports at the Beach complex in Georgetown.
The Ravens scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on a Braxton Hazzard single that scored what turned out to be the winning run.
Sophomore pitcher Lucas Joseph toed the rubber for the Ravens and picked up the win, going 6.2 innings and allowing just three hits. He helped himself at the plate, slamming a homer in the bottom of the third to add insurance.
Ravens freshman reliever Colten Crockett came in to get the last out.
Sophomore Christian Cabello worked the mound for the Vikings, throwing 5.1 innings and striking out five. He issued three walks. Emmett Wheatley came in from the bullpen to strike out one.
“We went in with high expectations and our bats were quieted by some good pitching and tough luck,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “We couldn’t get a hit in big situations to get some runs across the plate. We barreled a few balls that died in the wind. Christian [Cabello] did a very nice job on the mound, allowing just one earned run. All in all, we were pleased with the guys’ desire to battle it out for all seven innings.”
Sussex Tech picked up two hits from Crockett and Hazzard, and a single from Logan Micinowski.
Aaden Johnson, Trey Dickinson and Jordan Williams each got hits for the visiting Vikings.
Twenty-four hours later, the Vikings picked up their fourth victory of the season by topping Newark Charter 4-0 at Leroy Hill Park.
The Vikings started out with Joe Ruark walking, stealing second, moving the moving to third on a passed ball and then scoring on a sac fly by Aaden Johnson.
“We were able to put some balls in play hard and score a few more runs on some quality at bats by Aaden Johnson, Dom Mangini and Max Selders,” Evick said.
Mangini was lights out on the mound, going the distance while allowing no runs on three hits. He struck out eight hitters en route to his third win of the season.
Mangini also helped himself out at the dish, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Johnson had two RBIs, while Selders and Dickinson each went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Doron Griffin had had six strikeouts for the Patriots.
