Larry Wiley, veteran, extraordinary man

April 21, 2026

Larry Wiley, 89, passed away Sunday, April, 19, 2026. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, March 1, 1937, Larry had a lifelong devotion to “his” Ohio, especially Chagrin Falls, where he was raised by his parents, Norm and Florence, alongside his brother, Ken (all of whom preceded him in death). It was there, in the town he cherished, that he would eventually meet the love of his life, Laura Lee Owens – though that part of the story would unfold a little later.

Larry’s early years were marked by both leadership and excellence. In high school, he served as captain of the football team and president of the National Honor Society, among other accomplishments. He went on to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where he distinguished himself as both a scholar and an athlete. A standout in lacrosse, he was named intramural athlete of the year for three consecutive years – an achievement he took great pride in.

After graduating, Larry returned to Chagrin Falls on leave, where he reconnected with Lee, whom he had known only in passing during high school. Their reunion quickly grew into something lasting, and they were married the following year, beginning a partnership that would span a lifetime.

Larry served his country with honor and distinction for 21 years in the U.S. Army. His military career took him across the globe, including assignments in Germany and Iran, as well as hardship tours in Korea and Vietnam. Initially commissioned in the Corps of Engineers, he later transferred to the Ordnance Corps, where he earned numerous commendations for his leadership and service before retiring in 1980.

During these years, Larry and Lee built a family that remained the center of his life. He was a devoted father to Sarah (Eric Potter), Chas (Sarah Carlton) and Andrew (Linda Wiley), and nothing gave him greater pride than his role within his family.

Following his military career, Larry began a second chapter with a defense contracting company in Virginia, where he worked for 19 productive and fulfilling years.

Larry embraced life with enthusiasm and wide-ranging interests. He loved sports – especially football and golf – along with live theater, the music of Mozart and Billy Joel, and time spent at the beach. He had a deep affection for animals of all kinds, particularly dogs and cats, and even held a special fascination with lions. Travel brought him great joy, especially his trip to Africa, which remained among his most treasured experiences.

In retirement, Larry and Lee settled in Lewes, where they spent 17 wonderful years by the ocean. Eventually, they returned to Ohio to be closer to family, settling once again near Chagrin Falls, surrounded by loved ones and lifelong friends. Those final years were, for the most part, happy and full.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Lee; his children; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He lived an extraordinary life, defined by service, devotion, and a deep appreciation for the people and places he loved – and he will be remembered as an extraordinary man.

Services with military honors will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, May 8, at the Federated Church in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Following the ceremony, Lee and the family will host a reception at their home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Wildlife Federation or Rescue Village in Novelty, Ohio.
