Cape soccer shuts out Milford, Red Lion

JV squad improves to 10-0 ahead of battle against Caesar Rodney

The Cape girls’ soccer team has caught fire offensively in its last two games, posting shutout wins over Milford 6-0 April 30 and Red Lion 5-0 May 1.

Goalkeeper Brynne Fox recorded back-to-back clean sheets, turning away everything sent her way.

In the win at Milford, the Vikings dominated play, outshooting the Buccaneers 22-0 while holding a 4-1 advantage in corners. Ava Brown led the charge with four goals, scoring twice in each half. Jayden Jones added an assist, while Brown also converted a penalty kick, scored once unassisted and added another on a direct kick. Sophomore Ashlyn Panyko found the back of the net off an assist from Lily Touw, and Kailey McMahon added an unassisted goal.

“It was a great team win and fun to get back to our winning ways,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “Everybody got a lot of time. We’re starting to really get better, and we’re excited to see how the season finishes.”

Twenty-four hours later, the Vikings used a strong first-half wind to their advantage, scoring four goals before going on to defeat visiting Red Lion 5-0 on Cape’s Bermuda field.

Panyko opened the scoring for the second straight game, finishing a pass from Samantha Mayer in the eighth minute. Ten minutes later, Brown scored off an assist from McMahon. Bridget Connelly added a goal from Brown in the 26th minute, and Brown followed with an unassisted tally in the 30th. Mayer capped the scoring in the second half, finishing a pass from Brown in the 59th minute.

Fox made two saves in the win.

The JV squad remained undefeated April 30, earning an 8-0 win over Milford to improve to 10-0 on the season. The Vikings scored four goals in each half. Freshman Julia Moore led the way with three goals and an assist. Scoring a goal each were sophomore Alisa Tsirtsan, freshman Alexis Puddicombe, sophomore Zoey Mills, freshman Adryana Savage and freshman Rylie Lewis. Freshman Kenzie McLaren had two assists. Single assists were recorded by sophomore Aylssa DeRiancho, Tsirtsan and Mills. 

So far this season, the Vikings have outscored opponents 32-0. 

The Vikings return to action Tuesday, May 5, when they host Caesar Rodney at Legends Stadium. The Riders’ JV team is also undefeated at 9-0, having outscored opponents 65-0. The JV game begins at 5 p.m., with varsity following at 6:30 p.m.
