Sussex Tech boys' cross country team wins dual-meet title

A double-double dual meet at Millponds Nature Preserve off Abbott's Mill Road west of Milford was run Oct. 24 in 80-degree conditions.

Host Milford welcomed Cape Henlopen and Sussex Tech for the final head-on-head competition of the season before the Henlopen Conference and state meets.

Milford won the girls' race, beating Sussex Tech 21-34 and Cape Henlopen 20-35. The Sussex Tech girls defeated Cape, scoring 25-34.

Milford girls finished the regular season 11-1 behind No. 1 runner and senior captain Alexis Groce, who ran 20:32 on the slow course.

"Alexis is our senior captain; she's run pressure free and in front every race," said Milford coach Czar Bloom, now in his 15th season.

The boys' race was won by Sussex Tech 20-39 over Milford and 22-37 over Cape. The Ravens under coach Lou Nicoletti finished the season 11-0 for their first dual-meet conference championship.

"It's great for our boys to finally win the dual=meet title," said Nicoletti. "But this is a big meet sport. We have a nice pack of runners close together going into the conference and state meets; it should be a battle."

Victor Rueda paced the Ravens, running 17:03 just ahead of Milford’s Henry Phalen 17:07. Sam Hete of Tech was third at 17:20, followed by Austin MacElrevey of Cape 17:21, Trevor Maloney of Milford 17:46 and Jake Bamforth of Tech in 17:54.

"I run on this course every other weekend because I live close," said Rueda. "It was really hot in the woods, just no air. I went to the front but then Henry [Phalen] came up on me so I just tried to stick with him and outkick him at the end."
