Cape gets first win in scrappy game at IR

December 13, 2012

It wasn't pretty, but the Cape girls' basketball team finally notched its first win of the season, defeating previously undefeated Indian River 46-37 Dec. 11.

The Vikings lost their first two games of the season 75-50 to Smyrna and 61-16 to Ursuline Academy.

Despite a heavy dose of turnovers, Cape coach Lamont Hazzard was just happy to get off the schneid.

“It seems like every year we start out 0-2, and I was just afraid we'd start off 0-3,” he said. “It's kind of tough missing two starters.”

Senior guard Emily Baptiste is sidelined six weeks with a wrist injury, and junior guard Claudia Ratner is out for the season with a torn ACL, which has created some chemistry issues for Hazzard's team.

“We have been struggling because we lost our backcourt,” he said. “We're trying to find some chemistry. I think we're to the point now where I have a good seven to rotate with.”

Leading the way for Cape against IR was senior forward Kadijah Doughty with 18 points. Junior point guard Shantel Hazzard notched 10 points. Junior forward Alyssa Miller scored 8 points before fouling out with 3:27 left in the game.

Cape jumped out to an early lead, outscoring IR 17-7 in the first quarter. The Indians went on an 8-0 run to open the second quarter to cut Cape's lead to 2 and tied the game at 20-20 just a few minutes later. That was the closest IR would come the entire game, as Cape slowly rebuilt its lead in the third and fourth quarters.

Cape will play its fourth straight game on the road Friday, Dec. 14, when it takes on Sussex Tech at 5:30 p.m. The Vikings' first home game of the season is slated for 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 18, against Milford. Cape will head into Christmas break following its matchup with Caravel Academy at 7:15 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 13. Tech is 2-1 in the early season with wins over Milford and Laurel. Milford is 1-1, topping only Woodbridge. Caravel is 2-0, beating its opponents by 37 and 32 points.

"We're just trying to survive before the holidays and then just go from there afterward," Hazzard said.

Notes: Coach Lamont Hazzard was hit with a technical foul shortly into the third quarter after arguing a call. Junior guard Shantel Hazzard was then charged with a technical foul with two seconds left in the game after an aggressive foul on an IR player.
