Local photographer Angel Wilson wins Kodak Gallery award

March 16, 2010

Angel Wilson, owner of Creative Exposures Photography in Milford, recently won the Kodak Gallery Award for Photographic Excellence for her photograph of a napping newborn titled, “Sweet Dreams.”

The image won best portrait of a child 2009 as well as second place in the general portrait category in an annual print competition sponsored by the Delaware Professional Photography Association.

Another of Wilson’s photographs, which features a child sitting on a Harley Davidson motorcycle and is titled “Daddy’s Prize Possessions,” scored a merit and won third place in the portrait category in a Delaware Professional Photography Association competition last year.

The goal of Creative Exposures Photography is to celebrate life though the eyes of a child, and Wilson specializes in newborn, infant and toddler child portraiture. “I was a neonatal nurse for four years, which provided me with a lot of experience in handling babies,” said Wilson. “The skills I gained working in the NICU [Neonatal Intensive Care Unit] with babies sometimes weighing less than 2 pounds has been a great asset in my business as a newborn photographer.”

When photographing newborns, Wilson prefers the baby to be less than 2 weeks old, so she can capture the sleepy, scrunched-up poses such as the one featured in the award-winning “Sweet Dreams” image.

“Babies require much patience, and sometimes sessions can last up to two hours,” said Wilson. “It is a completely private, comfortable setting, and time is always allotted for the needs of the baby, whether it be to feed, change dirty diapers or sometimes just a few minutes for the baby to snuggle with Mom.”

Wilson’s studio has an assortment of unique accessories such as custom-made knitted hats, baby slings/cocoons, pettiskirts, scarves, clothing and hair accessories that allow her to create custom looks for her clients’ photographs.

Wilson also photographs older children, teens, high school seniors and families in her studio and on locations.

“I always strive to raise the bar of photographic excellence by attending workshops, seminars and professional schools. I try to keep up with the current photography trends, lighting techniques, and to carry the most-up-to date products for my clients,” said Wilson. “These images are lifelong memories that will be treasured for generations to come.”

Wilson is a member of the Delaware Professional Photographers Association and Professional Photographers of America.
