William 'Bill' Walls, retired Army captain

Captain William "Bill" Hampton Walls, 91, of Dover, formerly of Rehoboth Beach and Marydel, passed away Monday, Jan. 12, 2015, at Silver Lake Center in Dover. He was born Oct. 17, 1923, in Marydel, Md., son of the late John Wesley Sr. and Margaret (Shewbrooks) Walls.

Mr. Walls graduated from Dover High School in 1941. Following his graduation, he embarked on a 23-year career with the U.S. Army. He would serve in World War II and the Korean conflict where he received six bronze stars and numerous other citations and medals. Mr. Walls retired from active duty in 1965 and would continue to serve with the U.S. Army Reserves. In the mid 1970s he would retire with the honorable rank of captain.

Mr. Walls was a member of VFW Post 7447 and American Legion Post 5 in Rehoboth Beach. He was also a member of the Reserve Officers Association.

Mr. Walls enjoyed spending many hours on the Delaware waters either fishing or crabbing. He enjoyed doing yard work, going bowling, golfing with his friends or grabbing lunch at his favorite sub location Casapulla's, as well as enjoying his VIP status at Jimmy’s Grille in Bridgeville. He was a great story teller who always put his family first and loved spending time with them.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a dear friend by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Walls was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis J. Walls in 2003; his daughter-in-law, Brenda Walls in 2012; and a great-grandson, Caleb Harris. He is survived by his two sons: Brian Dalton Walls of Glen Burnie, Md. and John Hampton Walls of Wyoming; three daughters: Donna Bobzin and her husband Wayne of Dover, Diane Jiles and her husband Bill Hinton of Statham, Ga., and Victoria Walls and partner Adam Henderson of Rehoboth Beach; four grandchildren: Erica Kelledes, Heather Findlay and her husband Steve, Colin Jiles and partner Annielaurie Mullinax and Miranda Harris; six great-grandchildren: Taylor Frampton, Aaron Holden, Kaitlyn Findlay, Cohen Jiles, Makayla Jiles and Elijah Harris.

All services are private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
