Rehoboth tests local guards in Lifeguard Olympics

July 31, 2015

Lifeguards from along the eastern shore met on the night of July 23 to compete against each other in the 38th annual Rehoboth Lifeguard Olympics. The Olympics saw large crowds of residents and locals mixing with the beach patrols drawn in by the size of the event. With much cheering, sweating and smiling, guards from nine different patrols, all Delaware patrols and Ocean City, Md., ran, swam, pushed and pulled to prove they were the best.

The Olympics included numerous events in and out of the water that are common to lifeguard competitions, such as the mile run and the half-mile swim, but spectators also witnessed infrequent events such as landline, surf dash relay and tug-of-war. After about four hours of competing, the Bethany Beach Patrol was named the Olympics champion, followed by the Ocean City Beach Patrol in second and the Rehoboth Beach Patrol in third.
