Running of the Goat 5K set Aug. 21 for Milford Boys & Girls Club
The inaugural Running of the Goat 5K will be held at 6:30 p.m., Friday Aug. 21, starting at Arena’s Restaurant in Milford. There is also a free Billy Goat Kiddie K for ages 7 and under. Proceeds go to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware, Greater Milford Club. Attendees are asked to come dressed in their favorite goat costumes to support the Boys & Girls Club.
The name Running of the Goat comes from Goat Island, an eight-acre island in the Mispillion River within the city limits of Milford. It is a beautiful habitat consisting of forest and marshland and is an outdoor classroom for students as well as the community. The Milford Parks and Recreation Department, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control developed this venue, and it will be a portion of the course for the inaugural Running of the Goat 5K.
“The committee and I invite the local community and runners from around the state to come and visit lovely downtown Milford and experience the beauty and history of Goat Island,” says Joe Gannon, 5K committee chair. “Please enjoy the native plants and wildlife and visit our website www.cityofmilford.com for more information and visit www.bgclubs.org to learn more about the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milford.”
The course will be fun for on- and off-road runners and walkers and is USATF certified with chip timing. Entrants receive a gender-specific shirt, and giveaways and awards will be given to overall male and female, masters male and female, top three in 10-year age categories 13 and under to 70 and over, and top male and female walkers. There will be a post-race party for all participants and beer for those over age 21. The largest team will win an Arena’s Happy Hour. Wayne and Barb Kursh, race directors, acknowledge race sponsors Arena’s, Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales and Mispillion River Brewery.
To register online, go to www.races2run.com until Thursday, Aug. 20. Registration in person will open at 5:30 p.m. the day of the races. Cost is $25 in advance and $30 on race day.
