Eagles chaplain to speak at Delmarva Christian Schools banquet Oct. 9

October 1, 2015

Delmarva Christian Schools invites the public to the annual Student Scholarship Banquet at 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9, to be held in the school’s new Arts and Athletic Center at 21777 Sussex Pines Road in Georgetown. The banquet includes an evening of dining and fellowship as the school raises funds for students desiring a challenging, Christ-centered education. This year, guests will be inspired and encouraged as they hear a message delivered by former Philadelphia Eagles player - and now team chaplain - the Rev. Dr. Herbert Lusk II.

Known in the NFL as the Praying Tailback, Lusk has appeared on numerous broadcasts and has received countless awards, honors and citations. He has also been recognized in two documentaries by ESPN and NFL Films as the first NFL player to kneel and pray after scoring.

Early in his football career and at God’s leading, Lusk voluntarily left the Philadelphia Eagles to begin a ministry that meets the spiritual and physical needs of the impoverished of Philadelphia. Since 1982, Lusk, now senior pastor, has served the Greater Exodus Baptist Church, growing it from 17 members to over 2,000 under his leadership. In 1989, Lusk founded People for People, the community arm of his church. Over the years, PFP has developed initiatives including a K-8 charter school, an early childhood development center, a welfare-to-work program, a mentoring program for children with incarcerated parents, an abstinence program and a credit union offering financial education and services.

In 2003, with a desire to raise awareness about and funding for African AIDS orphans and families, Lusk founded Stand for Africa, garnering him a presidential appointment to PACHA.

Most recently, Lusk and his church, in partnership with Philadelphia’s Project H.O.M.E. and musician/humanitarian Jon Bon Jovi, completed construction of a $12 million transitional housing complex, providing tiered-cost housing for those striving for financial self-sufficiency. Lusk and Greater Exodus Baptist Church have also assumed ownership of a Christian school in one of the most severely financially challenged communities in Chester, Pa. In its first year, the school has already expanded to include fifth grade, with plans to add one grade each year.
