Philip Morton Gallery is proud to exhibit and represent the sale of a private collection of 10 never publicly displayed works of Howard S. Schroeder paintings through Sunday, Nov. 8.
Howard S. Schroeder was born in the Bronx in 1910. He was stationed at Fort Miles in Lewes during World War II. He and his wife Marian stayed in Lewes after the war, raising six children while Schroeder built his formidable reputation as an artist and art teacher.
The simplicity of life inspired his creativity. Little did he know his enchantment with the community would feed a legendary career as a beloved artist who excelled in many mediums, from pencil and charcoal sketching to watercolor and oil painting.
His creations remain in demand, as some are very reminiscent of a bygone era. And that, in fact, was one of Schroeder’s goals. He was determined to capture on paper and canvas a pictorial account of the slow, but inevitable development of Lewes.
Schroeder was featured on the CBS New Sunday Morning show, anchored by Charles Kurait in 1987. He died in 1995.
Schroeder painted around the world, but preferred working close to Lewes and coastal Sussex County. This collection of nine watercolors and one large oil painting reflect scenes from Lewes, Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk, Ireland, Norway and Morocco.
This private collection of 10 paintings was acquired directly from Schroeder, personally, from former neighbors in Lewes and has never been seen outside of their home.
The sale is open to the public through Nov. 8, with a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception at the gallery from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7. Everyone is welcome to attend.
