Barbara Longova of Rehoboth Beach passed away Thursday, Nov. 26, 2015, at her home. She was born in Baltimore, Md., daughter of the late William and Madeline (Bergerova) Long.

She was raised in Owings Mills, Md., graduating from Franklin High School. She raised her two children in Pikesville, Md. During that time she was lovingly known as “Miss Barbara” while she ran an at home daycare, so that she could be home for her children.

In 1993 she relocated to Rehoboth Beach. She began working at Beebe Medical Center where she held various positions, including information systems from which she retired in January 2013. Throughout the years, Ms. Longova enjoyed being involved in the Rehoboth community, volunteering and participating in activities including, but not limited to, the following organizations: The Metropolitan Opera, Rehoboth Beach Film Society, Rehoboth Art League, and VegRehoboth. She loved her life at the beach.

She was an adventurous traveler and has traveled extensively, including having visited all continents except for Antarctica.  She recently returned from a two-week trip down the Amazon River. She’s also traveled to 36 states. She was an avid reader, loved kayaking, the arts and wine.

But, mostly, she will be remembered as “Oma”. She was a devoted mother and grandmother to her two children and three grandchildren. She was often seen at various recitals and performances and loved being involved with all of their activities.

She will be remembered as a kind, loving mother, grandmother, sister and a dear friend to all who knew her.

Ms. Longova is survived by her two children: her son Richard “Dickie” Freeland and his wife Maritza of Edgewater, Md., and their daughter, Ruby; and her daughter Nicole White and her husband Chad of Annapolis, Md., and their children Gavin White and Lucy White; and her brother, Hal Long of Saint John, Ind.

The family is requesting that flowers not be sent. In lieu of flowers please consider participating in an activity that is in the spirit of Oma: go kayaking, perform a random act of kindness, book a trip, slip money in to a book at the bookstore to buy a stranger a book, pay for a theatre ticket for a friend, and/or eat a vegetarian meal.

Another option is that financial donations can be made to either Rehoboth Beach Film Society's Metropolitan Opera Series or The Rehoboth Beach Public Library in her name.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, Dec. 13, from 12:30 to 4 p.m., at The Boardwalk Plaza hotel in Rehoboth.
