Vikings place fifth overall

Editor’s note: The girls’ swim championships will be covered in a separate story.

The Cape boys’ swim team represented the Henlopen Conference with a bronze-medal performance in the DIAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Rawstrom Natatorium at the University of Delaware. The Vikings medley relay team of Brian Fleming, Holden Tighe, Kevin Lewandowski and Shane Toback took third with a time of 1:38.86, finishing behind the teams from Salesianum and Conrad.

It was the team’s first podium since Tighe took bronze with the free relay squad in 2022.

“It was a fantastic finish to a great season,” said Tighe. “Thanks to our coaches. The Cape swimmers worked hard all season for us to be in a position to be successful in making the podium. I would also like to add that this year we had the greatest relay in Cape history past or present, regardless of times.”

Cape was the top public school in the team competition, placing fifth overall.

“I thought we had a great tournament for both the boys and girls,” said Cape coach Bill Geppert. “I was so impressed by how hard they have worked this season, continuing to drop times and improving. We broke and rebroke records. It was just an awesome year. I believe we have the absolute best kids in the state at Cape. They work so hard and wear their feelings on their sleeve. I know that’s a biased opinion, but I would not trade them for anyone. I love all of them and am so proud to be their coach.”
