It was a windy two-bay day for the Cape lacrosse teams April 27, as the Ocean City Red Raiders girls’ team from New Jersey (9-3) docked at Champions Stadium in Lewes to face the unbeaten Vikings, while the Cape boys crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to battle the Broadneck Bruins.

The Cape boys (9-2) found power in the final hour, outscoring Broadneck 3-0 in the last period for a 6-3 victory. Boys’ scoring updates were announced from the Champions Stadium press box in perfectly precise enunciation by Patrice Riggin.

The game was tied 1-1 at halftime and 3-3 after the third period. Bruins goalie Matt Tellemer had 14 big saves to keep the game close.

Mason Trench topped five real-deal ticketed shots to lead the Vikings to victory. Cape is set to play at unbeaten Wilmington Friends at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 30.

Cape goal scorers were Burke Healy and Mike Guenther with two goals each, and Anderson Smith and Braddock Smith with one apiece. Broadneck goals were Blake Levicki with two and Liam Komlosy with one.

Coach Geoff Shupard: “The boys played hard and did a good job taking care of the ball. We do have to improve our shooting, but the speed and efficiency that the offense played with showed a big improvement. Defensively, coach [Jack] Lingo did a great job assigning matchups, and the boys did a great job of communicating, keeping those matchups and putting the ball on the ground. It’s always fun to go on the road and play a storied program like Broadneck. They are a good team, and this was a quality win for our guys. We still have some things to clean up, but the boys are working hard and moving in the right direction.”

Notes - The last time Cape won a game scoring six goals or fewer was May 2015 when they won 6-5 at Wilmington Friends in double overtime on an unassisted goal by Kyle Orton. Cape lost at then-unbeaten Wilmington Friends 10-8 in May 2017, then came back to beat the Quakers in the semifinals of the state tournament 16-7 behind Erik-Stephane Stancofski’s four goals and Brendan Kane’s 10 saves.
